Is this mahjong solitaire or the real four-player game?
Both, and you choose when you open it. Solitaire is the tile-matching board most people mean by "mahjong online". The live table is the four-handed game — draw, discard, claim, and a proper scored hand at the end — which you can also play two-handed, or against the computer.
Do I have to know the rules?
No. There's a how-to that teaches the same rules the game enforces, and a hand card you can open mid-turn (or print) showing real winning hands and what each is worth.
Is it really free?
Yes. Every game, every table, the chat, all of it — free, with no ads and nothing to unlock.
Do I need an account?
No. Nobody signs up, nobody gives an email. You make a family board, share the link, and whoever taps it adds their name and they're in.
Do we have to download anything?
